The Toyota Vios is a subcompact sedan that Toyota has produced primarily for Southeast Asia, China and Taiwan since 2002. It slots below the Corolla and replaced the Tercel, which was sold as the Soluna in parts of the region. The 2019 model is a third-generation Vios (coded XP150) in its 2018-facelift form. The Vios is not sold in the United States, and in India the same car was sold as the Toyota Yaris, never under the Vios name.

What the Vios Is
The Vios is a front-wheel-drive, four-door B-segment sedan designed for emerging and emerging-adjacent markets where buyers want low running costs and generous interior space. Its main regional rivals are the Honda City, Nissan Almera and Mitsubishi Attrage. In many markets the Vios is a common choice for taxis, ride-hailing fleets and first-time buyers, which has made it one of the most numerous Toyota models on the road in Southeast Asia.

Engines and Transmission
The 2019 Vios was offered with two four-cylinder engines in most markets. Entry variants used a 1.3-liter unit, while the 1.5-liter 2NR-FE produced about 107 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque. Power went to the front wheels through a five-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission with a seven-speed sequential-shift mode. Contrary to some early speculation, the Vios was never offered with a 1.6-liter gasoline or diesel engine.

Dimensions and Practicality
The third-generation Vios measures 4,410 mm long, 1,700 mm wide and 1,475 mm tall, on a 2,550 mm wheelbase. That footprint gives it more rear-seat space than many city cars while keeping it easy to park. The trunk is a conventional sedan compartment, and the cabin uses simple, hard-wearing materials suited to high-mileage fleet use.

Trims and Price
Trim names and prices varied widely by market. In Malaysia the 1.5 G was last listed from RM87,300, and in the Philippines the range ran from entry 1.3-liter variants through 1.3 XLE to the 1.5 G. Toyota has never published a US price for the Vios because the model is not sold there. The 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid Review and 2019 Toyota Corolla S Price And Review pages cover larger Toyota sedans of the same year.

The India Story
Toyota sold the third-generation Vios in India as the Yaris sedan, launching it in 2018 and discontinuing it in September 2021 because of slow sales. The car there was the same XP150 platform, fitted with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and a CVT or manual, but it was never marketed as the Vios. Statements that a “2019 Toyota Vios” was about to launch in India are therefore incorrect.
How the Vios Is Used
In Southeast Asia the Vios is valued for low fuel consumption, cheap parts and straightforward maintenance. That durability is why the model has been a favorite of taxi and ride-hailing operators, and why Toyota has kept the basic mechanical package largely unchanged across more than a decade of production. Enthusiast-oriented variants, such as the later Vios GR-S, added sportier styling but kept the same fuel-efficient engines.
Later Generations
The third-generation Vios received a second, more substantial facelift in 2020. A fourth generation arrived in 2022, debuting in Thailand as the Yaris Ativ on Daihatsu’s DNGA platform and powered by 1.2- and 1.5-liter engines. The Vios nameplate has now been in continuous production for more than two decades.
Interior and Features
Inside, the Vios is functional and spacious for its class. The dashboard layout is simple, with a touchscreen infotainment system on higher trims, air conditioning, and cloth seats that hold up to heavy use. Rear-seat legroom is a selling point in the segment, and the sedan body provides a lockable trunk that hatchbacks cannot match. Higher trims in some markets added features such as keyless entry, a reversing camera and alloy wheels. The overall emphasis is durability and low cost rather than luxury.
Regional Names
Outside Southeast Asia, China and Taiwan the same car has been sold under other names: as the Toyota Yaris sedan in the Americas, the Middle East and Australia, and as the Yaris Ativ in Thailand from 2017. That naming split explains why the Vios was never sold in the United States — Toyota’s US small-car line-up used the Yaris and Corolla names instead.
Fuel Economy and Running Costs
The Vios is engineered around low fuel consumption. The 1.5-liter engine with the CVT is the most economical combination in the range, and the car runs on regular-grade gasoline in all markets. Because the mechanical package has changed little over the years, spare parts are widely available and inexpensive, which keeps both maintenance and repair costs low — a key reason fleet operators favor the model.
Competitors
The Vios competes in the B-segment sedan class with the Honda City, Nissan Almera, Mitsubishi Attrage and, in some markets, the Suzuki Dzire. Its main advantages are Toyota’s extensive service network, strong regional resale value and a reputation for durability; its main drawbacks are unexciting performance and a cabin that trails newer rivals on technology.
