2019 Toyota Corolla Altis: Specs, Engines and Thai Pricing

The Corolla Altis is the Asian-market Corolla sedan. The 12th-generation E210 model reached Thai showrooms in 2019 with 1.6, 1.8 and hybrid power.

The Toyota Corolla Altis is the name Toyota gives the Corolla sedan in several Asian markets, including Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines, where it is sold as the brand’s C-segment sedan. The Corolla is the best-selling car nameplate in history: Toyota sold its 50-millionth Corolla in July 2021, during the model’s twelfth generation. That twelfth-generation car arrived on Toyota’s TNGA platform in 2018 and reached Thai showrooms in September 2019.

What the Corolla Altis Name Means

Toyota sells the Corolla under different names depending on the region. In North America and Europe it is simply the Corolla, while in Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines the sedan carries the Altis suffix. The Altis is mechanically the same Corolla sedan; the main differences lie in trim, equipment and the engine range, which in Asian markets has historically favored smaller-displacement units and hybrid powertrains to suit local taxes and fuel prices.

Twelfth-Generation Corolla Altis (E210)

The current Altis is based on the twelfth-generation Corolla, model code E210, which rides on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-C platform. The sedan body style was unveiled in November 2018 and launched in Thailand on 13 September 2019. Compared with the outgoing car, the sedan measured 4,640 mm long, 1,780 mm wide and 1,435 mm tall on a 2,700 mm wheelbase, making it about 10 mm longer, 5 mm wider and 45 mm lower while the wheelbase was carried over unchanged.

The Corolla is by far Toyota’s longest-running nameplate. Toyota introduced it in 1966 and began selling it in the United States in spring 1968 as a 1969 model. By July 2021, across twelve generations, the company had built and sold 50 million Corollas, making it the best-selling car name in the world. The Altis is simply the Asian-market sedan branch of that family.

Interior and Practicality

The E210 Corolla moved to a lower, wider cabin with a dashboard shared in concept with other TNGA models. Rear-seat legroom and a large trunk keep the Altis competitive in the compact-sedan class, and higher trims add features such as a head-up display, a digital instrument cluster, navigation and a power-adjustable passenger seat. The hybrid models position their battery pack under the rear seat rather than in the trunk, which preserves cargo space.

Exterior Design

The Asian-market Altis adopts the same design language as the European Corolla sedan, one of several body designs Toyota offered for the twelfth-generation car alongside distinct versions for the United States and Chinese markets. The look features a wide, low grille, slim headlights and a roofline that is 45 mm lower than before. LED lighting and larger alloy wheels appear as the trim level rises.

Engines and Hybrid Options

For Thailand, the new Corolla Altis was offered with three powertrains across six variants. Detailed specifications reported ahead of the launch listed a 1.6-liter four-cylinder for the entry cars, a larger 1.8-liter for the sporty GR Sport model, and a 1.8-liter hybrid for the upper trims, per paultan.org.

  • 1.6-liter 1ZR-FAE Dual VVT-i four-cylinder: 132 hp and 159 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual or a CVT.
  • 1.8-liter 2ZR-FE Dual VVT-i four-cylinder: 140 hp and 173 Nm, offered with a CVT in the 1.8 GR Sport.
  • 1.8-liter 2ZR-FXE Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid with an electric motor and e-CVT: a combined 122 hp and 142 Nm.

The hybrid is the efficiency-focused choice, while the 1.8-liter gasoline GR Sport is the performance-oriented trim. Toyota’s standard hybrid system uses a power-split e-CVT and needs no external charging.

Toyota’s hybrid system pairs a gasoline engine with one or more electric motor-generators through a power-split transmission. The car can drive on electricity alone at low speed, uses the engine for higher loads and recovers braking energy into a battery pack. This is a conventional (non-plug-in) hybrid, so it never needs to be charged from a wall outlet.

Trim Levels and Safety Equipment

The Thai range comprised six grades: 1.6 J, 1.6 G, 1.8 GR Sport, plus 1.8 HV Entry, 1.8 HV Mid and 1.8 HV High hybrids. The full Toyota Safety Sense suite — including autonomous emergency braking, all-speed adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist and automatic high beam — was fitted to the top hybrid, while lower grades used a reduced set of driver aids. A rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitor and head-up display were also available.

Pricing in Thailand

When it went on sale in Thailand in September 2019, the Corolla Altis range started at 829,000 baht for the 1.6-liter Limo and rose through 869,000 baht for the 1.6 G and 999,000 baht for the 1.8 GR Sport, topping out at 1,099,000 baht for the 1.8 HV High. Prices in other markets vary with local taxes and equipment.

Where the Altis Is Sold

The Altis name continues to be used for the Corolla sedan in Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines and other Asian markets. Buyers in those countries should treat the Altis as the local Corolla sedan, sharing its platform, hybrid system and safety technology with the global model.

Because the Altis is the local Corolla sedan, parts, servicing and resale values track the global Corolla, one reason it is among the most common cars on Southeast Asian roads. Shoppers should cross-shop it against other C-segment sedans such as the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 rather than against a separate model.
