2019 Toyota Camry: Redesign, Specs and Review

The 2019 Toyota Camry was the second year of the eighth-generation XV70, offering a 203-hp four-cylinder, a 301-hp V6 or a 208-hp hybrid.

The 2019 Toyota Camry is part of the eighth generation of Toyota’s mid-size sedan, coded XV70. It arrived for the 2018 model year on Toyota’s TNGA GA-K platform and carried over largely unchanged into 2019, when it remained one of the best-selling sedans in the United States.

The Camry Nameplate

Toyota introduced the Camry in 1982 as a front-wheel-drive compact, and over more than three decades it grew into a mid-size sedan sold around the world. For many years it was the best-selling passenger car in the United States, a position it held across multiple generations. The eighth generation represented one of the largest redesigns in the model’s history.

Eighth-Generation Camry (XV70)

The XV70 Camry replaced the XV50 and went into production in June 2017; US production ran through April 2024. It shares the GA-K platform with the Avalon and the Lexus ES. The redesign moved away from the previous model’s soft styling toward a lower, wider stance, with a lower hood and a more aggressive front end.

The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder produced 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, or 206-209 hp in some market calibrations. The V6 produced 301 hp and 267 lb-ft. The Camry Hybrid combined a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with an electric motor for 208 hp total, and in some markets Toyota also offered an older 2.5-liter four rated at 178 hp.

Safety

Toyota made Toyota Safety Sense P standard across the Camry range. The package includes pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams and adaptive cruise control. The 2019 Camry earned strong ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in most configurations, and a Top Safety Pick+ award in trims with the better headlights.

Trims and Pricing

The 2019 Camry started at $24,095 for the L, rising to $24,600 for the LE, $25,800 for the SE, $29,175 for the XLE, $29,725 for the XSE, $34,300 for the XLE V6 and $34,850 for the XSE V6. Buyers could choose from four-cylinder, V6 and hybrid powertrains within those trims. Chief rivals were the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and Ford Fusion.

Global Reach

Toyota sold the Camry in dozens of markets and built it in the United States, Japan, China, Thailand, India and Russia, among other locations. Production of the XV70 generation ended at different times in each market, running from 2022 in Russia to 2024 in the United States, before the model was replaced by the next-generation Camry.

What Changed for 2018-2019

The eighth-generation Camry was a deeper redesign than a typical model change. The GA-K platform lowered the center of gravity and increased body rigidity, and the car grew slightly longer and lower than the XV50 it replaced. The hybrid returned for 2018 with more power and, in some trims, a lighter battery, and Toyota made the sportier SE and XSE grades a larger part of the range to broaden the Camry’s appeal.

How the Hybrid Works

Like Toyota’s other full hybrids, the Camry Hybrid uses a power-split system in which an electric motor and a gasoline engine drive the wheels through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. The car can move on electric power alone at low speeds, the engine shuts off when it is not needed, and regenerative braking recovers energy during deceleration. This is why the hybrid delivers better city fuel economy than the gasoline four-cylinder.

Sales and Market Position

The Camry has long been one of the best-selling cars in the United States, and the XV70 generation continued that record through the late 2010s. It also sells in large numbers in China, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Its main competitors were the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and Ford Fusion, all of which offered similar four-cylinder, V6 or hybrid choices.

Interior Comfort and Practicality

The Camry seats five, with good front and rear legroom for the class. The trunk holds between 15.1 and about 16 cubic feet depending on the powertrain, and the rear seat folds on most trims to carry longer items. Toyota fitted a range of comfort and convenience features across the lineup, from a basic 7-inch touchscreen on lower trims to leather, heated and ventilated seats, navigation and a premium audio system on the top grades.

Every XV70 also came with a temporary spare tire and a full complement of airbags as standard across trims, and the model was one of the first Toyotas to offer a head-up display in the mid-size class.
