2020 Toyota Urban Cruiser Review, Engine and Price

The 2020 Toyota Urban Cruiser was a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza sold in India and Africa. Here are its engine specs, dimensions and price.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is a name Toyota has used for several different vehicles since 2008, so the first task in reviewing one is to establish which car is meant. The 2020 Toyota Urban Cruiser was a subcompact crossover SUV sold in India and parts of Africa. It was not a Toyota design: it was a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, built by Maruti Suzuki and launched in India in 2020. This article explains the 2020 model, its engine and price, and how it differs from the European car that used the same name.

Why the Name Is Confusing

Toyota has applied the Urban Cruiser badge to at least five distinct vehicles. It began as a concept in 2006, then became the European-market version of the second-generation Toyota Ist, a small hatchback with SUV styling, sold in Europe and Latin America from 2008 to 2014. The name returned in 2020 on the rebadged Suzuki Vitara Brezza for India and Africa, and again from 2022 for the rebadged Grand Vitara, marketed as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder in India. A further Urban Cruiser Taisor, based on the Suzuki Fronx, followed in 2024, and a battery-electric Urban Cruiser, a rebadged Suzuki e Vitara, was added in 2024 and 2025. Understanding this history prevents confusion over what a “2020 Urban Cruiser” actually is.

The 2020 Urban Cruiser in India

The 2020 Urban Cruiser was Toyota’s second vehicle to be based on a Maruti Suzuki model, following the Glanza hatchback. Maruti Suzuki built it at its Gurgaon plant in India, and Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold it through its own dealer network. Mechanically it is a Vitara Brezza with Toyota-specific front-end styling, giving it a closer family look to Toyota’s larger SUVs. It was sold from 2020 until 2022, when the second-generation Brezza arrived and Toyota replaced it with a new Urban Cruiser based on the Suzuki Grand Vitara. Toyota sold 7,600 Urban Cruisers in India in 2020 and 27,015 in 2021.

Engine and Mild Hybrid

The 2020 Urban Cruiser used Suzuki’s 1.5-liter K15B four-cylinder gasoline engine. In this application it produced 77 kW (103 hp, or 105 PS) and 138 N⋅m (102 lb-ft) of torque, and it was paired as standard with a 12-volt SHVS mild-hybrid system that uses an integrated starter-generator to assist the engine and recover energy under braking. Buyers chose between a five-speed manual transmission and a four-speed automatic. Drive went to the front wheels only; there was no all-wheel-drive option. Fuel economy was quoted at 17.03 km/L for the manual and 18.76 km/L for the automatic under Indian test conditions.

Dimensions and Exterior

The 2020 Urban Cruiser was a sub-4-meter SUV, a class shaped by Indian tax rules that favor cars under 4 meters in length. It measured 3,995 mm (157.3 in) long, 1,790 mm (70.5 in) wide and 1,640 mm (64.6 in) tall, with a 2,500 mm (98.4 in) wheelbase. Curb weight was roughly 1,135 to 1,150 kg (2,502–2,535 lb). The short footprint kept it in the lower tax bracket, while the upright body, roof rails and raised ride height gave it the SUV look buyers in the segment wanted. Unlike the Vitara Brezza, the Urban Cruiser wore Toyota front-end styling over the same basic body.

Interior and Features

Inside, the 2020 Urban Cruiser offered seating for five with a straightforward, durable layout. Equipment varied by trim, with higher versions adding a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic climate control and keyless entry. Safety features included dual front airbags as standard, with higher trims adding more, along with anti-lock brakes and a rear parking camera on upper grades. As with the Vitara Brezza it was based on, the cabin prioritized practicality and easy cleaning over premium materials. Price and Variants

Autocar India reported that the Urban Cruiser launched at prices between ₹8.40 lakh and ₹11.30 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), across six versions and three trim levels with two powertrain combinations. It was priced slightly above the equivalent Vitara Brezza. Because it was built in India and sold mainly there and in a few African markets, it is a right-hand-drive model and was not offered in North America or Europe. It sat below Toyota’s larger SUVs such as the 2019 Toyota Harrier Price, Review in other markets.

The Earlier European Urban Cruiser

The original Urban Cruiser sold in Europe from 2008 to 2014 was a different car entirely. It was a version of the second-generation Toyota Ist, a subcompact hatchback, offered with a 1.33-liter gasoline engine making 99 PS (73 kW) and 132 N⋅m, or a 90 PS (66 kW) 1.4-liter turbo-diesel with 205 N⋅m. A six-speed manual was the only transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard, with the diesel optionally available with an all-wheel-drive system. Despite seven airbags and standard traction control, it earned only a three-star Euro NCAP rating.

What Came Next

The Urban Cruiser name continued after 2022. The second-generation Brezza’s place in Toyota’s Indian lineup was taken by the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a rebadged Suzuki Grand Vitara offered with mild-hybrid and strong-hybrid powertrains. In South Africa and the Middle East the same model is simply called the Urban Cruiser. A battery-electric Urban Cruiser, based on the Suzuki e Vitara, arrived in 2024 and 2025, giving the badge its third distinct meaning in under two decades.
